Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency Shuts Down 2 Mortuaries and a Funeral Home
The Mortuary and Funeral Facilities Agency has shut down three facilities in Greater Accra for operating without licenses and failing to meet environmental standards.
This crackdown targets non-compliant private and public facilities, with officials warning that operators must comply with regulations to avoid shutdowns.
The facilities that faced closure include Children’s Hospital mortuary, Ebenezer Funeral Parlour, and the University of Ghana Hospital mortuary for not meeting standards and compliance.
The Registrar of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency, Francis Ennin, said they have written several letters to the managers of those facilities as well as done media announcement to warn them but they have refused to adhere to the prescribed regulations.
The Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital mortuary was shut down due to regulatory non-compliance.
Inspectors found public health risks, including workers lacking personal protective equipment and the use of air-conditioning instead of compressors to store bodies, posing a health hazard to the surrounding community.
Ebenezer Funeral Parlour in Kasoa was found to be operating without registration from the regulator.
The Agency had previously visited the Kasoa facility and urged them to regularize their operations, but to no avail.
Similarly, the University of Ghana Hospital mortuary was inspected and found to be operating below standards, with several complaints noted.
The Registrar of MOFFA, Francis Ennin, said they will continue the exercise until operators do the right thing.
He said they cannot come to terms with owners who want to operate their facilities without regulation.
