Officials from the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) recently paid a visit to the Global Mercy Ship docked at Tema Port, where they inspected the vessel’s mortuary facility.
Dr. Philip Sarpong, the Agency’s Deputy Registrar, led the inspection team. He said the visit was aimed at checking whether the facility meets basic sanitary standards and follows proper procedures for handling and preserving human remains.
During the exercise, the team looked at several areas, from the facility’s infrastructure and equipment to its sanitation practices, record-keeping systems, and how remains are handled and stored.
Dr. Sarpong explained that this kind of inspection is part of MoFFA’s broader responsibility to license and regulate any facility in the country involved in storing, transporting, or disposing of human remains. The goal, he added, is to make sure these facilities operate in a way that safeguards public health while still respecting the dignity owed to the deceased.
Overall, the Agency praised the Mercy Ship’s management for meeting national standards, though officials say they’ll keep working closely with the team to make sure that compliance continues.
